Nanotechnology has done much to improve health. Here are a few examples:
Nanotechnology in the drug word mostly means smaller pieces of particles. The smaller the piece, the larger the surface area to volume ratio is and the easier the substance can be absorbed. Nanotechnology allows for lower dosages because the drugs are absorbed more efficiently.
Gold nanoparticles can be used as disease sensors. They attach to antibodies and light up when exposed to ultraviolet light.
Nanoshells are silica surrounded by gold or silver and shaped like a sphere. They absorb infrared light as energy and heat up to kill tumors.
Sunscreen has nanoparticles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which are reflective and prevent harm from solar radiation. The use of nanoparticles to form a screen is called nano coating. Nano coating can protect cloth from stains, make paper waterproof, and in some cases even repel dirt. There is controversy about the nanotechnology behind sunscreen. Some worry that the nanoparticles can penetrate the skin and cause problems. So far though, it seems that they only rest in skin creases and don’t actually go past the first layer.
These are just a few examples of the role of nanotechnology with regard to health. If there is a specific topic that you want me to address in my next article please mention it in the comments section.
