Well, nobody loves to be in pain. Let alone be it uncontrollable pain which kind of makes a pause in our lives for some moment. There are a number of diseases which cause tremendous pain for example-cancer.
Pain killers give momentary relief which stays for a while, and also has many adverse effects on our health and other organs of the body. To find out a permanent solution to this problem, the scientist has started a research work with the help nanotechnology that has high hopes of discovering therapies for people who are suffering from unbearable pain.
Scientists at Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) are working on a project to develop a technique which consists of gold rod made with the help of nanotechnology application that targets pain receptors to reduce pain.
Gold nanorods are nanosized rod with a diameter of less than 100 nanometers. A hair has a diameter of 100,000 nanometers, so you can guess how tiny the nanorod are. They are not visible with naked eyes.
The researchers put a coating of protein on the gold rods. This type of protein is a special protein, which helps to transport fat within the body. The fat allows the nanorod to stick to the nerve cell membranes, which carries the receptors called TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1).
After the application gold rods, infrared light was then applied to the rods which activates the pain receptors that allows the calcium ions to enter the membrane. The pain receptors, helps to relieve pain as long as they are active. Advantage of applying infrared light on the gold rods ensures no harm is caused to the cell membrane which bears the TRPV1 Pain receptors. Moreover, using lipoprotein-coated gold nanorods does not require genetic modification of the target cells. Also, the nanorods 1,000 more efficient than the magnetic nanoparticles when it comes to heat generation and in activating TRPV1 receptors in the cell membranes.
"The gold nanorods can be retained in the body for a prolonged period," says Tatsuya Murakami, the main member of this research. "Local injection of our gold nanorods might enable repetitive and on-demand treatment for people experiencing intractable pain because prior genetic engineering of the target cells is unnecessary."
